How to Choose The Right Spill Kit?

Firstly, you need to know the type of liquid that's been spilled. All liquids are either oil based (fuels, oils, petrols, vegetable oils and other messy liquids) or water based (non-aggressive and aggressive chemicals). Then there are those liquds that fit a little bit into both categories, which are classed as general purpose or universal liquids. General purpose liquids are typically non-aggressive chemicals, such as automotive coolant, agricultural chemicals etc.

Now that you know the liquid type, the next step is to choose the right sized spill kit. Ask yourself, what quantity of liquids are you using or storing? Quantity plays an important part, but that's just the start: as sometimes it's about the type of kit you need - do you need it portable enough to fit into a machinery cabin or confined space? Then our 20L and 50L portable chemical spill kits are your best option. But if you're in a manufacturing factory, industrial workshop, mining or a power station, with multiple workers and workstations, then our 120L and 240L mobile wheeled Chemical Spill Kits will be the best option.

Spill Kit Colours - What's the Deal with the Lime Green & Yellow Colours?

You'll notice that Spill Kits come in many varied colours - it sometimes depends on who sold them, and it sometimes depends on the company buying them. Some business customers prefer spill kits in their company brand colouring (this is common at service stations). The problem this presents is that there's little uniformity - a Chemical Spill Kit might be blue at one workplace, and a hydrocarbon one red, but at the next workplace it's the opposite colouring. It's confusing.

In order to end the confusion the AusSpill Association was formed to bring about uniformity and a common guideline for spill kit colouring and identification. Ecospill proudly supports the AusSpill Colours as follows:

  • Fuel and Oil Spill Kits - Lime Green Base with White Lid / Trimmings
  • General Purpose Spill Kits - Lime Green Base with Gray Lid / Trimmings
  • Hazchem / Chemical Spill Kits - Lime Green Base with Yellow Lid / Trimmings

While we support the AusSpill Colours, Ecospill also sells spill kits in the traditional Red, Yellow and Blue colours as well. If you require your Spill Kits in a certain colour, please call us on 1300 736 116, or note your colour in the ‘additional comments’ field on your online order.

Not all Spill Kits are the same

There are many vendors offering spill kits, and you might think that they're all the same standard and quality - they're not. Be careful about buying a spill kit just because it's cheaper. Some things to be wary of - spill kits with thin, half empty land socks. If a land sock isn't plump and full there is the potential for a spill to leach through the gaps in the absorbent filling. Also be wary of spill kits with cheap absorbent powder. Some competitors only offer kitty litter type absorbent (like zeolite, bentonite or attapulgite). These absorbents while cheap will end up costing you more - you'll end up using twice as much, they take twice as long to absorb and they leave a wet residue on the floor (creating a trip hazard). Worse yet, some of those may contain crystalline silica too.

Ecospill Hazchem Spill Kits feature ChemSorb Absorbent, which is crystalline silica free, and is the best, fastest and safest chemical absorbent available. Don't risk your health, it's not worth the personal cost.

Benefits of ChemSorb Absorbent:

The main absorbent powder is ChemSorb (TM). ChemSorb particulate is a lightweight, fast acting absorbent particulate, offering excellent absorption per density mass. ChemSorb contains NO nasties and free from any crystalline silica, so it's safe for all your staff. It is non-toxic, inert and safe to use.
